Family court is a court of law that handles cases involving domestic issues such as divorce, child custody, etc. In the United States, family court was first established in 1910, and originally called domestic relations court. Before the establishment of family court, most family matters fell under child or juvenile courts formed in the late 19th century. A family court falls under the heading of Trial Courts of Limited Jurisdiction, which means they will deal only with specific cases, such as familial and domestic relations cases. They are usually presided over by a single judge without a jury.
