A dissolution of marriage is a much simpler process and may eliminate some of the expense of divorce. When filing for dissolution, there is no fault established. A petition will not be filed until all issues are agreed upon by both parties, such as division of assets and debts, spousal support, and all parenting decisions including child support, custody, visitation, etc. During this time, the couple has no subpoena power and must voluntarily trade information needed.

Once a petition is filed with the court, the parties must appear and testify that they both want the marriage dissolved, they have made full disclosure of all assets and debts, that they are satisfied with the agreement and have signed it voluntarily.

The final result is the same as divorce, the marriage is ended.
