ABOUT THE BROADMOOR

Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, The Broadmoor is a five-star resort with a rich history that began in 1918. Located just minutes from the Colorado Springs Airport, and about a 90-minute drive from Denver International Airport, non-stop flights are available from many U.S. cities. The Broadmoor is much more than a run-of-the-mill resort. It’s situated on 3,000 immaculately landscaped acres near the base of the Rocky Mountains and features 700 luxury guestrooms and suites, 15 on-property restaurants (several operated by world-class chefs), a tennis club, a complete workout facility, multiple swimming pools, plus a full-service day spa.

What golf enthusiasts visit The Broadmoor for, however, is to experience its three famous courses, which have hosted countless tournaments throughout the resort’s history. It’s here that the 2008 U.S. Senior Open (July 28th through August 3rd) and the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open (July 7th through 10th) will be played. “The Broadmoor is proud to be chosen as the host site of the 2011 United States Women’s Open,” said Russ Miller, Director of Golf at The Broadmoor. “It is not only an honor to host our seventh USGA championship, including the 2008 U.S. Senior Open, it is a tremendous tribute to the city of Colorado Springs”.

The original Broadmoor East 18-hole championship course opened in conjunction with the resort in 1918. It was designed by master golf course architect Donald Ross. Some of the holes have since been redesigned by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. This is one of only a dozen North American and Caribbean courses to receive a five-star rating by Golf Digest. Also offering a combination of holes designed by Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones, Sr., The Broadmoor’s West Course offers 18 challenging holes, situated on rolling fairways and multi-level greens that overlook the city and the mountains. This course is littered with sand bunkers and water hazards. The resort’s 18-hole Mountain Course opened in July 2006 and was designed by Jack Nicklaus’ company, Nicklaus Designs.

This is a wonderfully scenic course that plays to a maximum of 7,700 yards, par 72. Green fees at the resort vary by season, but range between $95 and $190 for 18-holes. Rates include green fees, cart fee, all day range use and bag storage. Club and shoe rentals, plus caddies are extra. Tee times can be reserved up to 60-days in advance. After golf, consider a visit to the world-class day spa, where a variety of relaxing and rejuvenating massage treatments, designed especially for men, are available.

You can also enjoy drinks at one of the resort’s upscale lounges, or full meals at one of several fine-dining restaurants. When you’re ready to retire, spacious and comfortable guestroom accommodations that offer spectacular views and top-of-the-line amenities await. While the golf courses are the centerpiece of this resort, the offerings go well beyond the links. Aside from the luxurious accommodations, it’s the stellar and personalized service offered here that guests remember. With the many area attractions and additional fine-dining restaurants located just minutes from the resort, it’s easy to spend a week enjoying all that The Broadmoor has to offer. It’s no wonder why multiple U.S. Presidents, world leaders, and countless celebrities have vacationed here throughout the years.

ARNOLD PALMER’S BAY HILL CLUB & LODGE

Moving to the East Coast, Orlando, Florida is home to Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge. Sure, it’s located in Orlando, about 20 minutes from The Walt Disney World Resort, but this is no Mickey Mouse golf course. Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge sets the standard for what a guys-only vacation getaway should be. The clubhouse, guest accommodations, spa, tennis courts, lap pool, fitness center, restaurants, lounges and even the locker rooms, offer a one-of-a-kind vacation destination for serious golfers. This resort is literally the winter home of Arnold Palmer, who can often be found playing cards in the men’s locker room/lounge when he’s not on the links. The resort also regularly attracts many PGA legends. The Bay Hill Club opened in 1961 as an exclusive, private, members-only club.

“When you check into the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, you are granted all the privileges of membership, including access to one of the greatest golf courses in the world,” said general manager Ray Easler. In 1976, Palmer purchased Bay Hill Club & Lodge, which recently underwent a massive renovation that was completed in late-2007. Currently, the resort offers 70 ultra-comfortable and nicely designed guestrooms, plus 10 two-bedroom cottages, all of which have a very masculine feel and decor. When you’re ready to play golf, the links, which have been redesigned by Palmer, are only steps away.

The resort’s 18-hole championship course is home to the PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational Tournament. In all, the resort is situated on 270-acres and offers a total of 27-holes. “It’s a demanding test of golf for pros and amateurs alike, but eminently fair. This is a tough, demanding golf course. But it is also a straightforward layout,” said Brian Dorn, the Bay Hill Club & Lodge’s director of golf. “For a true golfer, there’s nothing like going to a course where PGA champions have walked and played the same holes. It gives you a chance to try to duplicate the shots of some of the greatest players in the game,” added Dorn.

Oh, and if you’re interested in perfecting your game, the famous Arnold Palmer Golf Academy offers programs to players of all ages and levels, which are based on Palmer’s unique philosophy of the game. Participants can take part in an introductory, half-day program, or really improve their game by experiencing an intensive five-day academy (each day features four hours of expert and personalized instruction).

“Regardless of the resort’s occupancy, it remains fully staffed every day throughout the year, so every guest always receives the utmost personal attention. If you need anything, you literally just have to ask. We don’t present ourselves as a golf resort. Instead, we are a one-of-a-kind private club,” added Easler. “When you spend a night here, you are staying at Arnold Palmer’s home. In fact, the next day, you could end up sharing breakfast with Mr. Palmer in the Club’s dining room.”

For someone looking to truly get away from the craziness of life, the Bay Hill Club offers a small, home-away-from-home retreat that offers all of the services you’d expect from a full-service resort, but without the crowds and attitude. While you’re visiting the Orlando area, you might want to check out the links at The Walt Disney World Resort, as well as at the Ginn Reunion Resort, which also offers luxurious accommodations surrounded by a 54-holes of unforgettable golf.
